When players are selected for teams using Team Sheet Builder each player is assigned a sequential number 1,2,3 etc.
For a few sports the numbering system is satisfactory (such as football, cricket, rowing and hockey). For rugby union the number system aligns to a player's position on the field, which generally corresponds to the number on a player's shirt.
For other sports a system based on numbers is not as helpful (for instance Athletics, Swimming, Netball, Lacrosse, Basketball etc) where players ideally need to know their selected postition on the field of play, or the event they have been selected for (rather than a number). The introduction of positional names for these sports is therefore considered important and will be implemented in a subsequent upgrade of Team Sheet Builder.
In the interim period, before positional naming is implemented, we recommend adopting the following guidelines. This will ensure any previously selected team aligns with the positional names when they are introduced:
Hockey:
Note according to the 2007/08 rules even a goalkeeper is not essential (!) and there are generally no fixed positions. The following is therefore a guide only:
Rugby:
Netball:
Basketball:
Football: Dependent on the playing system and style of play adopted for any given match, the following positions will might be selectable.
(Note: these positions do not necessarily correspond to a shirt number and therefore no number is shown in the list, although a number can be allocated to each player using Team sheet Builder).
Lacrosse (girls):
